Dillon Reilly
Website: Referred by: From a Friend From: Oakland Calif Time: 1999-08-13 17:05:00 Comments: My name is Barbara Dillon Reilly and I am the Exec VP of the Oakland Navy League, Oakland California. In 1987, employed by Oakland A's Baseball I organized a fundraiser for the California Vietnam Veterans Memorial being built in Sacramento. Included in this special day at the ballpark I got together several former Vietnam POW's for a reunion and had Leo Thoresnis throw out the First Pitch . Included guests I had flown in was Gary Thornton, and Jerry Driscol. From that reunion the MIA POW flag was raised and flown over the Oakland Alameda Coliseum Complex. Jerry, I might add was instrumental with the help of MinnTwin MLB player Gary Giatti in getting the flag flown. Recently a local Vietnam Veterans group contacted me, aware of my interests and still employed in Sports Marketing that the flag was not flying. After organizing a huge e mail campaign to the Mayor of Oakland, Jerry Brown and the Alameda County Supervisors, I think our e mails brought down the system there was such a great response from the Oakland Navy Leagues' reaching out to every Admiral, Captain and Commanding Officer on several aircraft carriers, from the Pentagon to NATO , our message was being heard. The flag was still not raised and in further investigating the reason, it was traced to one person that was managing the Complex, brought in a year before and decided to take the flag down because they were totally unaware and really didn't care to have it on the flag pole any longer. This infuriated the local Vietnam Veterans group, myself, having lost a brother in 1968 in Vietnam, and our Oakland Navy League group.. After tracing to whom this person reported to which happened to be back in PA, we then e mailed that person wanting an explanation and asking that they again fly that flag. Our request was immediately responded to and with in 2 days the MIA POW flag was flown at not only the Oakland Alameda Coliseum Complex but all 13 that the management company handled across the United States. I then asked the Seattle Mariners to fly the flag in their new Safeco ballpark and it is now flying. The Oakland Navy League would like to see that every Sports Complex across the country follows Oakland's lead. We know it is of course in San Diego Padre's stadium . Any suggestions you may have or anything the Oakland Navy League may do to help you please let me know. Very Respectfully, Barbara Reilly Exec VP Oakland Council Navy League of the United States |

Early in 1999 a member of the Diablo Valley VietNam Veterans contacted me, and the Executive VP, as part of a grass roots effort to get the POW/MIA Flag reinstated over the Oakland Colesium Complex. Since then, Oakland Council has been working with the DVVNV to get the POW/MIA Flag flying over all above ground BART Stations. Anywhere I see an American Flag being flown, I contact the business and ask them to fly the POW/MIA Flag too. Without exception, they have all been cooperative and interested. Our goal is to educate those who would forget the price of freedom. |

I knew there was one POW/MIA balloon but not three. I can't wait until I see your summer schedule and hope to see the POW/MIA balloons in flight. You truly give flight to the POW/MIA issue and that is great. You are the only way the POW/MIA's can soar above the situation they are in. Thank you for a great web site. God bless you. |

WE TRANSFERED FUEL, MOSTLY AVGAS, DIESEL, AND JP4 TO THE VARIOUS SITES AROUND QUANG TRI VIA PIPELINE. LOOKING THRU THE WEBSITE IS VERY SOBERING FOR ME. THE INDIVIDUAL NAMES AND HARD INFO HIT ME HARD. I'VE NEVER LOOKED AT THE HARD FACTS BEFORE. I DO NOT SUFFER FROM THE 'SYNDROME', NOR DO I WAKE UP AT NIGHT SWEATING AND SCREAMING....BUT I DO DREAM ABOUT MY TIME THERE AND I DO WAKE MYSELF UP. I DO NOT BELIEVE THAT PEOPLE WHO WERE NOT THERE UNDERSTAND THE EXPERIENCE THAT WE WENT THRU. WE WERE NOT DRUG CRAZED KILLERS AND RAPIST. WE WERE SENT THERE TO DO A JOB AND I KNOW WE DID OUR JOB WELL. ANYWAY, THANKS FOR THE 'WAKE-UP CALL'. ONCE AGAIN VIET NAM HAS AFFECTED ME. |

Seems, somehow, it was not that long ago...too many bad dreams, flashbacks and every now and then a chopper passing overhead will transport me back in time and I hear that endless sound, so very lonesome but yet comforting. I never thought my time it Vietnam would end but some how it did and I'm here. Haven't kept up with my army buddies but I don't see the people I left when I went to Vietnam. I'm a recluse now and I prefer it that way. |

Website: Veterans for a Change Referred by: Just Surfed On In! From: Lincoln, Illinois Time: 1998-03-10 03:52:00 Comments: Looking forward to FREEDOM FLIGHT coming to Lincoln, Illinois to our 6th ANNUAL Veterans for a Change on October 30th, 1998. The kids have lessons ALL MONTH of October each year, veterans COME TO SCHOOL and teach the children. The kids collect "change" and donate to local veterans to brighten the day for veterans in Quincy and Danville VA Hospitals here in Illinois. To date, the children have donated OVER $9,000.00 to veterans. BUT WHAT THEY HAVE GOTTEN from the veterans FAR EXCEEDS what our little drop in the bucket does..... can NOT even BEGIN to thank the veterans ENOUGH.......we are "rich" because of our partnerships in education with our beloved veterans. The children will be ELATED! They adopted a POW, Jeffrey Charles Lemon...long ago. I think ALL CHILDREN should learn about "veterans"..we are going nationwide this year. I could say more, but just gonna "leave a little something" for all veterans who pass this way...this says it all.....*HUG* Thank-you for your service...and my freedom! |

This may not seem a very important issue if one does not realize that no flag has ever replaced Old Glory in any Military Formation in the history of this Nation. Fly your Patriotic Ballons over us some day.
